Show Review of Cirque du Soleil’s CRYSTAL
Cirque du Soleil finally returns to Broward County at the BB&T Center in Sunrise with its first presentation on ice entitled, Cirque du Soleil Crystal. The story begins with a young girl feeling as misunderstood as all youth feel at one time in their lives.
Our beautiful young lady, named Crystal, is confronted with facing her feelings in a most unique way. She goes through this confrontation literally through the icy crystals. Do the icy crystals symbolize her life, in reality? The audience begins to realize she perceives her life to be cold and sometimes complicated. Throughout her journey she meets different characters that eventually come to represent what is most true to her ideals and desires.
Some of these ideals represent fear and chaos, while others represent joy, laughter and love. Each part of her journey begins with a new performer or group using their talents and athleticism to transform the perceptions of the audience. For example, the juggling makes you happy, the couple skating and aerial trapeze inspires romance, while the high-flipping hockey brings excitement.
The visuals were actually simple using a snowy and chilly theme (we got to see snow!) for the setting, while the costumes seemed to have a part to play of their own; each costume telling a small story. The music was amazingly modern yet classical in style; featuring several violin solos, a saxophone solo, a clarinet solo, not to mention pop-pieces covered during the show performed originally by singers, Beyonce and Sia (what a surprise!).
I could say a lot more but in short, the show was once again captivating to watch and Cirque du Soleil Crystal is all set to once again brighten and enlighten, as it has been for over 30 years. The show is running July 18 through 29. For more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/crystal
